ASH selling cigarettes with backing from Public Health Minister Anne Milton

You can tell things are bad for funds when ASH have to resort to selling cigarettes AND  get the Public Health Minister Anne Milton to sell the cigarettes for them.

I'm Germany at the moment. We went via Dover the night before last and at the first UKBA 'Checkpoint' the officer asked us where we were going.

As I was brought up to never lie to policemen (and others of their ilk) I answered the nice Officer truthfully and said 'Dunkerque' because that was where we were going to there and then ie ferry to Dunkerque.

When I said that he suddenly became visibly alert(and probably aroused) and asked how long for. Again I answered truthfully and said 'Dunno two or three weeks, we're going back home to Germany.

At which point (ie me confirming that we weren't CRIMINALS (aka 'Day Trip Shoppers') he deflated and looked bored again and then said 'I don't need to see your passports then'.

It was all a little weird and unsettling. Seems that UKBA have orders to note down passports/number plates of anyone openly admitting to being a Shopper.

That would give them reasonable cause to stop people on their return.

  2. SBC ... I'm sure the other checkpoints you passed through on your way to Germany were just as rigourous :) ... and after all, you were leaving the UK!

Hope your return to UK in a few weeks is free of interference and hassle.

lncidentally, both me and Zaphod have put in an SAR (subject access request) to UKBA see what data they hold on us. We've given them a lot of trouble so it should be interesting but we do expect them not to be truthful on what they hold on us.

Getting out of England does have a 'escape from Stalag 9' about it. By comparison the only noticeable thing about crossing the French, Belgian, Dutch and German borders was the changing font of the motorway signs.

  4. Fairly soon I would predict a back-up of hand paddled row boats in the Channel, all coming back into UK with perfectly legal quantities of tobacco for personal consumption, gliding very quietly against the swell of the waves, in the dead silence of night, whilst the rest of the world is asleep.

But even then, UKBA will probably enlist the help of trained German shepherds standing on the white cliffs of Dover with search lights scrolling back and forth over the frothy sea as UKBA agents march diligently, back and forth, binoculars strapped around their necks and Nazi issued machine guns hanging balanced over their shoulders, fingers stroking the triggers, always on alert should they be commanded to commence fire to save the UK from the evil weed decimating the UK Fatherland.

"In the eyes of the Tribunal the review letter contained several preconceptions, prejudgments and non-sequiturs"

"the absurdity of this reason is demonstrated by simply stating it"

"We therefore find that Mr Sked misdirected himself as to the Policy in carrying out the review and his decision is therefore one that no reasonable review officer could have arrived at."

... commonly known here at N2D as 'Skeds' ... that is to say these are Judges comments regarding UKBA Review Officer Ian Sked's reasons for rejecting peoples appeals against seizures.
